King VS Popes

Picture
Kings and Popes both had much, much power in Medieval Europe. Kings had great political power and Popes had great spiritual power. Together the Pope and the King took over most of Medieval Europe. The Pope was head of a big church in weastern Europe. Since that is where most Europeans went for church they all went there for spiritual help. They looked at the pope as God's representative. Since they saw him as God's representative they looked to him for answers in difficult situations. He also made rules, such as if someone tried to go against the church he had the right to punish them in any way he wanted. This punishment was feared because if they were punished this way they wont make it to heaven.  Popes had gotten so much power they were treated like royalty until they came into a conflict with another powerful leader, the king.
Europe was divided into many small states. These states were owned by many king with very little power. But only the most powerful kings owned lands lieengland, france, and the holy Roman Empire.
